The U.S. Department of Energy's latest report describing business use of fuel cells in the past year profiles 34 companies and finds that together they used more than 250 fuel cells totaling 30+ MW of stationary power. That's an impressive total; it's enough to supply electricity to more than 21,000 households.

Increasing Domestic Energy Production is not so Straightforward

In his most recent State of the Union address, President Obama discussed the need to reduce reliance on foreign oil by increasing the country's domestic energy production. But where is all that new domestic energy coming from? Certainly not from oil since the U.S. has only 2 percent of the world's oil reserves. The most obvious alternatives are natural gas and renewable energy sources. How that mix plays out is still anybody's guess, but the U.S. Energy Information Administration is predicting that natural gas production will grow by more than 8 trillion cubic feet by 2035, reducing the share of energy use derived from imported oil to just over 35 percent.

Generation Y, those consumers between the ages of 19 and 31 years old, may be the brightest ray of hope for the future of hybrid and electric vehicles. A recent study by Deloitte, which partnered with an MSU business professor to conduct a study to determine different consumer preferences in regards to vehicle types, found that a full 59 percent of young adults prefer some type of electric vehicle over those with conventional gas engines. Only 37 percent surveyed favored a gas-only vehicle.
