Make it Better than Rain Did: Ash's Reversible Cape

For each tutorial I publish, I add our 'Upload a Photo' link so that readers like you can post the results. It helps me to know if a tutorial works, and offers first-person experience for the next reader who tries the instructions.

To the reader, apparently this translates to, 'I CHALLENGE THEE TO A DUEL'. It's like I took off my glove and slapped ya across the face with it. You guys are always outdoing me! I feel like you didn't even want a pop tab bracelet last summer. You just wanted to blow me out of the water.

Well, ya got me again. After following my simple hooded cape tutorial, DIY Fashion reader Ash decided to put me in my place by making her cape reversible. This is another one of those moments when I look at your submissions and go 'Doh! Why didn't I think of that!'. Yes, behold, a reversible, shimmering, huge hooded cape. Then look at my brown one.

Yeah.

To get some tips from Ash (clearly I needed 'em) check out photos of her reversible cape and read about her project experience. See, I'm on to you, now. I'm steppin it up a notch. I might even buy special lights to photograph my craftiness. It's on like Donkey Kong, readers.

For Valentines Day this year, I'd like to focus on another kind of love; the love we have for our hometowns. Yes, this probably has something to do with my husband being away with the Army this Valentines Day, but stay with me, here. Shopping local is a great way to show some support for the community... and who doesn't love a sexy economy? Destroy a Sweater the Right Way

If you want to destroy my sweaterrrrrr... sing along, now! Okay, that's not really part of the tutorial. I'm just partial to sing-a-longs. Don't we all feel closer, now?

In case you've been living under a rock all winter (and that's not a bad idea, hibernation should be a valid option. Move over, Patrick!), you may have noticed that one of the latest sweater trends is that of a loose knit, or... a rougher loose knit. I'm talking about sweaters that look like the wearer returned them to the store by way of rolling out of a moving truck.

Just as designer jeans can come pre-faded, torn and fringed, sweaters are undergoing the same mistreatment among manufacturers. Thousands of 'destroyed sweater' styles are making the rounds at retailers like Forever 21. But this look takes more than a cheese grater and the urge to get revenge on a repeat-offender itchy sweater.

I served a right piece of justice on this sweater, and I'll show you how to use my 'Precision Unraveling' method to carefully pick out a pattern on your sweater that lends texture and more opportunity to layer colors underneath. It's more than holes; you can create zigzags and stripes, too.
