I don't know about where you are, but where I am, the weather is naaaahsty today. (Yeah, we know, Florida, and we really don't want to hear about it, mmm-kay?) I don't even want to think about candy-colored Lamborghinis or flighty Ferraris. I want the four-wheel-drive stability of a Mercedes G-wagen and the smell of very, very nice leather. Oh, and heated seats. And maybe someone to bring me a cup of coffee in my Mercedes.

It does seem weird to say "finally," since the concept debuted in 2008, which you may remember was not a hot year for automobiles of any kind, let alone a brand-new company that wanted to built alternative-fuel sports cars with six-figure price tags. The SL-class from Mercedes turns the big six-oh next year, so the company is gearing up with a new lighter, more efficient roadster to mark the anniversary. The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL550 does the line justice, more so than some of those squared-off numbers from the go-go 80s. This new incarnation looks nearly as fast as the original.

At the 2011 Geneva Auto Show, supercar manufacturer Gumpert showed its second-ever model, the Gumpert Tornante. With a more spacious cabin, more room for luggage, and such niceties as heated seats, the Tornante is intended to be the more civilized brother of the bad-to-the-bone apollo. I got to test drive a Jaguar XJL Portfolio edition for a week, with its heated seats (three levels of warmth!), heated mirrors, heated steering wheel, and quick-acting defrost. It had lots of other nice things, but on a dark December day, those are the features I'll remember best.
