Weekend in Eugene - a Good Time to try Oregon's Newest Boutique Hotel

I just returned this evening from having spent a couple of days in Oregon's second-largest metropolis, the very progressive and gay-friendly city of Eugene, which is perhaps most famous for its being home to the University of Oregon. Situated at the southern end of the Willamette Valley, just about 110 miles south of Portland, Eugene makes a great base for exploring either the Cascades to the east or charming coastal towns like Florence and Yachats to the west. But it's a lively, inviting destination in its own right, with several museums affiliated with U of O, a wealth of rugged parks and recreation areas, and proximity to a growing number of southern Willamette Valley wineries (the most nationally renowned being King Estate, about 20 miles southwest). With a metro-population of about 350,000, the region has a sizable GLBT population, and it hosts the increasingly well-attended Eugene-Springfield Gay Pride Festival each August.

Girl Bar Dinah Shore 2012 Moves From Palm Springs to Las Vegas

Best Meals of 2011

I'm one of those, depending on your perspective, annoying or enlightening Facebook friends and Tweeters who constantly posts pictures of the restaurants I visit in my travels - along with the inevitable close-ups of food, which, frankly, don't always look especially appetizing depending on restaurant lighting and exactly what's on the plate (I learned long ago to avoid posting shots of chili, black-bean soup, and oyster stew in darkly lighted restaurants - no matter how tasty they actually are, they always come out looking like bowls of slop). Given how much time and effort I put into researching where to eat, I figured I may as well put together a story naming some of the most memorable meals I've enjoyed during the past year, so here you go.

Oklahoma City Moves Gay Pride to May, Teams With Gay Rodeo

Oklahoma City has joined an increasing number of cities (Austin, TX; Atlanta, GA; Hartford and New Haven, CT) in moving their Gay Pride festival from the traditional month of June to a different time of year. In 2012, OKC Pride will expand from its traditional weekend of events to a full 10 days of fun and celebration, commencing May 18 and last through May 27. In previous years, the city's Parade and Festival have taken place in late June. This is great news for Oklahomans who wish to attend one of the big events around the country that coincide with the Stonewall Riots commemoration in late June - cities such as New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, St. Louis, and Seattle all fall into this category.

Athens, Georgia: Boybutante Ball, AthFest, and More

I spent a couple of days recently in one of my favorite small cities, Athens, Georgia. Home to the University of Georgia, an exceptionally rich underground music scene (that incubated the careers of Michael Stipe and R.E.M. as well as the B-52s and the Indigo Girls), and one of the most vibrant and active gay scenes in the South. Major university towns are often progressive places with welcoming attitudes toward gays and lesbians - elsewhere in the South, Chapel Hill (NC), Charlottesville (VA), and Gainesville (FL) have similar vibes.
