Nanxun Community Immersion with Tracy Lesh

I'm off tomorrow with for 2 days to Nanxun, a water town about 2 hours from Shanghai. Many small towns in the Yangtze River Delta are called "water towns" because they were built on a canal system. Many still retain their ancient architecture and have historic, heritage sections of town. Nanxun is one of these but because it's located relatively far away from Shanghai, it is one of the less-frequented by tourists and remains therefore "authentic". (Any reader of mine may know my take on authenticity but anyway...)
...

That said, I do feel confident now to bring you a couple of "complete guides" to the city. These are meant to start the visitor off, give a visitor some good ideas of how to spend time in Shanghai and launch an educated and fun visit here.
...

As a cosmopolitan city, Shanghai boasts all kinds of authentic world cuisine and none is more welcome than my new neighbor Pasha. Run by Mr. Emre Gürel, a Turk who has been in China for many years, Pasha purveys all kinds of delicious dishes, many with ingredients brought directly back from Turkey and prepared by their resident Turkish chef.
...

Art Appreciation with Sheila Greenspan and Shanghai's Eastlink Gallery

I started a five-week course today under the expert guidance of art educator Sheila Greenspan who visits Shanghai annually to give the art appreciation course in cooperation with Eastlink Gallery. I signed up with the hope of accomplishing several things. First, I wanted to gain a better understanding of which Shanghai art galleries are worth visiting in the first place. Second, I hoped Ms. Greenspan would spoon-feed me Chinese contemporary art - a topic I fail on many levels to understand. My approach to art is one of quick decision and taste - do I like it? Would I hang it on my wall? This doesn't seem very educated; and I admit, I'm also lazy.
...

Much Happening at Glamour

We got a sneak preview last Saturday of Glamour - the newly revamped and revived celebrated cocktail bar on the Bund. It has always been divine, and really needed no improvement. But then again, adding 32 wines by the glass, a Champagne bar and a kitchen that operates from 5pm-1am is really, actually, quite an enhancement.
...

Outside of eating and drinking - Chengdu and Shanghai at Night

And while I highly recommend spending a lot of time in restaurants in China sampling regional cuisines and enjoying as many xiaolongbao as you can handle, sometimes another night of eating and drinking can feel tiresome.
