I just spent a lovely afternoon walking along the Embarcadero near the ball park, taking in the brilliant blue skies and gorgeous bay views, feeling elated that the real San Francisco summer is finally here. Our warmest months, September to November, have arrived. Every autumn I remember why this is the best time of year to be in San Francisco. So with all this great weather happening, it's a terrific opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy some of San Francisco's beautiful parks and recreation areas. Happy Birthday Chez Panisse

I would be remiss not to mention a special birthday this week, one that will not go unnoticed by foodies everywhere: the 40th anniversary of Chez Panisse. This legendary Berkeley restaurant is hailed as the birthplace of California Cuisine, a style of cooking based on local seasonal ingredients that has arguably influenced every chef in America. Its proprietor, Alice Waters, continues to be a pioneer in the food world with her Edible Schoolyard efforts, not to mention her latest cookbook, The Art of Simple Food.

Street Food Festival

I don't usually plug street festivals as their quality varies dramatically, but this week I'm excited to talk up La Cocina's Third Annual San Francisco Street Food Festival, happening this Saturday August 20^th in the Mission. Street food - small, owner-operated trucks, carts, and pop-ups - have gained cult status here in San Francisco and this festival is your chance to sample the best of the best, from tasty tacos to organic ice cream. These micro vendors will be joined by 25 of the area's top restaurants, too. Some of my personal favorites are among the vendors, including Pizzeria Delfina, the Slanted Door, Three Twins Ice Cream, and Nettie's Crab Shack. Specialty drinks and live music will help set a festive tone.

Wines Au Naturel

Interest in natural and organic wines is heating up these days, and it's no surprise San Francisco is leading the way. Given SF's green spirit and proximity to so many wineries it makes sense that the latest trend in drinking is happening at organic wine bars. In the forefront is Yield, a cozy spot that serves only natural, bio dynamic and organic wines. Also popular is Terroir, which is part wine store and part wine bar. Both places offer enticing nibbles like cheese and salami plates, and each encourages patrons to linger. Knowledgeable staff is on hand to offer suggestions; and special events and wine tastings are often on the calendar.

Custom Clothier in North Beach

North Beach is primarily known for its Italian eateries and late-night bars, but is also home to a tiny fashion Mecca on Grant Street. This charming narrow street is lined with one-of-a-kind boutiques, many with a distinctly local and bohemian flair. Among them is Al's Attire, a destination in itself for both visitors and locals. A favorite among SF celebrities like Carlos Santana, Al's Attire is that rare breed of store that offers custom clothes and shoes for both women and men at affordable prices. The owner, Al Ribaya, specializes in vintage and hard-to-find fabrics which he crafts into beautiful suits, dresses, coats, and more. Recently moved to larger digs on the corner of Grant and Vallejo, All's Attire now boasts 4,000 square feet of fashion finds (he also sells terrific ready-to-wear pieces.) Filled with whimsical vintage fashion props like mannequins and shoe forms, the store is worth a look even if you don't buy anything. Vacation Rentals By Owner in SF

Although I love hotels, I often prefer to rent an apartment while on vacation, particularly if I am staying for a week or more. Over the years I have rented a studio in New York for a quick trip with a friend, a two-bedroom in the heart of Rome for a recent family getaway, and a luxurious flat in Paris for a family reunion.

Golden Gate Park With Kids

Even after fifteen years in San Francisco I'm still discovering new things to do with my daughter in Golden Gate Park. For years we made the Botanical Gardens our regular spot for Sunday strolls and feeding the ducks; paddling on Stow Lake is another favorite venture. Recently I discovered the Sharon Art Studio,where she will likely take classes one day. No matter what age your kids are, I highly recommend a visit to the park for a summer adventure. From riding on a vintage carousel to traipsing through the rainforest at the Academy of Sciences, there's always something to do in Golden Gate Park with little ones in tow.

San Francisco's New Mini Parks

San Francisco is turning pavement into parks! In the past year, a handful of individually designed "parklets" have been created on city streets and sidewalks as part of the city's Pavement to Parks program. While most parks are in San Francisco's residential neighborhoods (there are two near where I live in Noe Valley) , the marquis project, Powell Street Promenade, is smack in the middle of downtown and will officially open Wednesday July 13^th. These parks are inspired by the recent success of similar projects in New York City - where plazas and seating areas have been created by painting or treating the asphalt, placing protective barriers along the periphery, and installing moveable tables and chairs. Powell Street promenade will be six feet wide and two blocks long, with public seating and solar-paneled lights.

Jewels in the Square

With the start of summer comes a great reason to hang out in Union Square: Jewels in the Square. This program of free shows ranges from dance to live music to circus performances and movies.
