For the past few days, Apple's website has been counting up to a historic download. Today, Apple announces the 50 billionth app has been downloaded from the App Store, which opened in July of 2008 with just 500 apps. For those counting, that works out to almost 30 million downloads a day.
...

One interesting tidbit at the Google I/O conference may very well make a lot of iPad users happy. Google announced a redesigned Google Maps app for the iPad. The app has a new user interface designed to make it easier to use navigation and public transport features and has improved the search tools. It should arrive this summer.
...

Ready to get rid of your old, bulky point-of-sale machine? Square is already one of the top ways to accept credit cards using a tablet or smartphone, and now with the Square Stand, credit card transactions are made more convenient. And combined with the Square software, you can connect a receipt printer or kitchen printer, a barcode scanner and even a cash drawer.
...

The iPad Mini is just around the corner... or perhaps it is coming later this year. Or maybe we'll get a version later this year and one early next year.
Bloomberg Bashes iPad Mini to Drive Traffic

An interesting bit of drama is making the rounds after Bloomberg posted an article contending that the iPad Mini's falling demand is pushing Pegatron Electronics' sales down. The centerpiece of the article is a pseudo quote from Pegatron CEO Jason Cheng. The following is directly from the article:
...

Out-of-Touch Bill Gates: iPad Users Frustrated They Can't Type

It's clear Bill Gates doesn't know much about the iPad, no doubt not owning one himself. In an interview with CNBC, Gates noted that "a lot" of iPad users were frustrated. "They can't type," he said, adding, "They can't create documents."

I guess Microsoft was so busy creating their keyboard cover, which inconveniently makes the Surface tablet more difficult to use on your lap, they didn't notice the wide variety of wireless keyboards and keyboard cases available for the iPad. He must have also missed the memo on the word processor (as well as spreadsheet and presentation software) available for the iPad.

Maybe Bill Gates thinks Microsoft Office is the only office suite in the world. That's a dangerous way to think considering OpenOffice's office suite is quite functional and absolutely free for PCs, and given
Read Full Post

Out-of-Touch Bill Gates: iPad Users Frustrated They Can't Type originally appeared on About.com iPad on Tuesday, May 7th, 2013 at 12:51:52.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

How to Get Google Now on iPad

Google made a small splash last week by releasing Google Now for the iPhone and iPad. But those hopping on the app store and doing a search will quickly find out that there isn't actually a Google Now app in the App Store. That's because Google Now isn't an app. It's an update to Google Search, Google's "home page" app for the iPhone and iPad.
...

Apple's reported earnings of $9.5 billion based on $43.6 billion in gross sales managed to beat both Wall Street's and Apple's own expectations. Apple sold 34.7 million iPhones, above Wall Street's expected 34 million and an 88 percent increase from last year. Apple also sold 19.5 million iPads, beating the 18-19 million estimate.
...

Vendetta Online Docks With iPad Still a Work in Progress

Vendetta Online, the long-running space MMO from Guild Software, made its debut on the iPad late last week. Similar to Eve, Vendetta Online boosts the classic space trading and fighting sim into the massively online world, differing itself from Eve with its twitch-based gameplay.

I've long felt that games like Elite, Privateer and Freelancer would be great on the iPad, but while Vendetta Online doesn't quite disappoint, it does miss the mark. The interface is a clear port from the PC, which makes it a little clunky on the iPad. Worst, the controls simply don't work well. The game offers two ways to play: using touchscreen controls or using accelerometer controls. Unfortunately, neither method is implemented very well.

The touchscreen controls use the classic circle method to simulating the thumbstick on modern console controllers, but the implementation is poor. Instead of
Read Full Post

Vendetta Online Docks With iPad Still a Work in Progress originally appeared on About.com iPad on Monday, April 22nd, 2013 at 12:38:56.

Permalink | Comment | Email this
