50 Billion Served: Apple App Store Records Historic Download

For the past few days, Apple's website has been counting up to a historic download. Today, Apple announces the 50 billionth app has been downloaded from the App Store, which opened in July of 2008 with just 500 apps. For those counting, that works out to almost 30 million downloads a day.

Google Maps Coming Back to the iPad

Out-of-Touch Bill Gates: iPad Users Frustrated They Can't Type

It's clear Bill Gates doesn't know much about the iPad, no doubt not owning one himself. In an interview with CNBC, Gates noted that "a lot" of iPad users were frustrated. "They can't type," he said, adding, "They can't create documents."

I guess Microsoft was so busy creating their keyboard cover, which inconveniently makes the Surface tablet more difficult to use on your lap, they didn't notice the wide variety of wireless keyboards and keyboard cases available for the iPad. He must have also missed the memo on the word processor (as well as spreadsheet and presentation software) available for the iPad.

Maybe Bill Gates thinks Microsoft Office is the only office suite in the world. That's a dangerous way to think considering OpenOffice's office suite is quite functional and absolutely free for PCs, and given

Apple Manages to Exceed Expectations While Posting Worst Quarter in a Decade

Apple's reported earnings of $9.5 billion based on $43.6 billion in gross sales managed to beat both Wall Street's and Apple's own expectations. Apple sold 34.7 million iPhones, above Wall Street's expected 34 million and an 88 percent increase from last year. Apple also sold 19.5 million iPads, beating the 18-19 million estimate.

Vendetta Online Docks With iPad Still a Work in Progress

Vendetta Online, the long-running space MMO from Guild Software, made its debut on the iPad late last week. Similar to Eve, Vendetta Online boosts the classic space trading and fighting sim into the massively online world, differing itself from Eve with its twitch-based gameplay.

I've long felt that games like Elite, Privateer and Freelancer would be great on the iPad, but while Vendetta Online doesn't quite disappoint, it does miss the mark. The interface is a clear port from the PC, which makes it a little clunky on the iPad. Worst, the controls simply don't work well. The game offers two ways to play: using touchscreen controls or using accelerometer controls. Unfortunately, neither method is implemented very well.
