iPod Minis: Address Books, Patents, and Money

A justified kerfuffle was kicked up last week when it was discovered that the popular social app Path was uploading iOS users' address books to its servers without permission or notification to attempt to help its users contact other people. Needless to say, people were not happy.
- Congress asked some questions, Path apologized and vowed to change course, Apple promised to make address book sharing optional in future iOS versions, and--believe it or not--jailbroken apps were found by one study to transfer less user data than officially sanctioned apps. That's a lot of action for less than 10 days!
In ongoing patent news:
- Apple has expanded its suit in the U.S. against Samsung to include more patents and products.
- Apple has also asked a bankruptcy court judge to allow it sue Kodak for patent infringement.
A study by the Fair Labor Association has found that the conditions at the Chinese contractor Apple uses for its manufacturing are "way, way above average." This study comes after the widely reported problems at the Foxconn plant, including worker suicides in 2011.
Here's a fun hypothetical: what if the Dow had added Apple in 2009 when it had the chance? Then the Dow would be at nearly 15,000. It closed yesterday at 12,780.

iPod Minis: Patent Wars, Big Profits, Workers' Rights

The patent wars haven't stopped, but some of the major technology companies that have been engaged in the battles are trying to figure out a truce. Cisco, Apple, and Microsoft have all called for the same terms to license the foundational patents that all of their products use.
- Google, continuing its recent run of success at not being evil, says, "Nope. We're going to keep on suing."
The conditions at Apple-supplier Foxconn (the Chinese company that builds the iPad, iPhone, and other products) continues to draw attention. CNN recently covered the story and a workers' rights group is petitioning Apple to improve conditions at their suppliers.
Want a good representation of how quickly the iPhone and iPad have sold (especially after those amazing financials Apple posted a couple of weeks ago)? Check out this graph of sales over time. Crazy.
- Needless to say, Apple ended 2011 as the smartphone vendor with the largest marketshare in the world.
In the first glimpse into how iTunes Match is working for music companies and musicians, TuneCore reports that it has already received US$10,000 in royalties for its artists in just two months.
