Casting on in Two Colors

Most of the time a standard long-tail cast on is a fine way to start any knitting project, color knitting or otherwise, but there are occasions when you might want to use a cast on that's worked in two colors.
...

Entrelac Mitts

Earlier this week I said something about entrelac being a great way to show off self-striping yarn. Well, that got me thinking about actually knitting a project using entrelac and self-striping yarn, so I did, and you know what? I was totally right.
...

Entrelac for Crocheters

I know a lot of knitters also crochet, so I thought it worth mentioning that you can also crochet entrelac. The method used to make entrelac crochet is a form of Tunisian crochet, where multiple stitches are kept on the hook as you work across the row (or across the individual square, in this case) and then worked back off. Tunisian crochet is a great gateway into crochet for knitters, because leaving the stitches on the hook makes sense to us (Tunisian also looks the most like knitting when it's done, so that's pretty fun).
...

Books for Learning More about Entrelac

Entrelac can easily become an obsession for knitters. Once you get the hang of it, it's really a lot of fun, and you'll start thinking of lots of different ways you want to use it.
...

Knitting in the News: Knit Valentines, Knitathons and a Knitting PM

Though Valentine's Day has come and gone, it's worth taking a look back to see the lovely knit Valentines that decorated Washington, D.C.'s Dupont Circle for the holiday. The Phillips collection teamed up with the local yarn store, Looped Yarn Works, to whip up the love letter to the neighborhood. You can see more photos at the Flickr stream.
...

Try out Entrelac with These Free Patterns

The easiest way to go about knitting entrelac is to make a big rectangle, which is what I did for my two-color Entrelac Pouch. This super-easy bag is a great introduction to entrelac knitting, and with the addition of a quick lining and a zipper would be a great bag to hold makeup or even to use as a little clutch (if worked in a fancier fabric).
...

A Handy App for Estimating Yardage

I love Ann Budd's little booklet The Knitter's Handy Guide to Yarn Requirements. This little laminated guide lists the basic yarn requirements for different sizes of different garments and projects -- hats and scarves, sweaters and vests, gloves and mittens, socks -- based on the size you want to make and the gauge of yarn you want to use. It's a quick and easy way to get an idea of how much yarn you'll need for a particular project, and I use it a lot when I'm buying yarn (though I usually get a little extra, just in case).
...

Getting Started with Entrelac

I always think of entrelac as a color knitting technique, though this method of working triangles and diamonds for a woven look can be worke din a single color (and is quite effective in a multicolored or self-striping yarn).
...

The new edition of The Principles of Knitting is set to be released today. After years of hopeful speculation on our parts and unbelievable amounts of hard work on the part of June Hemmons Hiatt, the second edition of her beloved reference on all things knit finally sees the light of day.
...
