Almost a year ago, VIZ Media debuted the first issue of Shonen Jump Alpha, the weekly, all-digital version of their manga magazine. But on Monday, January 21, VIZ Media, Shonen Jump and Shueisha took things one step closer to fulfill the wishes of North American manga fans: they unveiled the new Weekly Shonen Jump, featuring the latest chapters of Naruto, Bleach, One Piece and more, in English, on the same day that these same chapters appear in the Japanese print edition of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine appear on newsstands in Japan.

Toronto Comic Arts Fest Announces 2 Manga Artist Guests for 2013

The organizers of the Toronto Comic Arts Festival made their first announcements of special guests scheduled to appear in their May 2013 event. Besides American and European comics talents like Art Spiegelman (Maus), Raina Telgemeier (Drama and Smile), and Maurice Vellekoop (A Nut at the Opera), TCAF 2013 will also feature two very special guests from Japan: Taiyo Matsumoto (creator of Tekkon Kinkreet, and the upcoming release, Sunny, both from VIZ Media) and Gengoroh Tagame (The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame, a collection of this bara manga master's work, from PictureBox).

After a many months hiatus (sorry!) it's time to finish up what I started with the Making a Living in Manga series.

When we first started looking at the dysfunctional state of affairs for Western comics creators who work in a manga-influenced style in Making a Living in Manga Part 1, we outlined 9 reasons why the manga-making ecosystem in North America is broken. Now, in Part 5, we're ready to talk about trying to take this sad song and make it better. I initially meant for Part 5 to be the final part in this series, but this essay got so long, I had to break down the 10 ideas for fixing a broken economy for manga-makers into two parts, with 5 ideas each. Canadian Comics Comes to Tokyo for International Comics Festa

JManga Translation Battle: Vote Now for the 11 Finalists

After sifting through many, many submissions, JManga.com has narrowed down the field to 11 finalists in their The Manga Translation Battle.

Many took up the challenge to translate a sample chapter from three new Japanese manga titles into English, to vie for prizes, including a trip to Japan, which will include attendance at the Japan Media Arts Festival in February 2013, and a grant to act as the official translator for the series when it's published on JManga. Runners-up will receive new Apple iPads.
