TV Legend Barbara Walters Will Retire Next Year

The TV airwaves will be losing one of its most iconic 10 TV legends. ABC personality Barbara Walters says she'll retire next summer.

Walters, who is 83 years old, still works like someone decades younger. In announcing her plans after retirement, she says she'll remain an executive producer on the ABC talk show The View and will still appear occasionally.

TV Station Apologizes for Its Reporting on the Cleveland Kidnappings

By now, you probably know the story of the three women who were held captive in Cleveland, Ohio, for more than a decade before finally being rescued. A Cleveland TV station has apologized on two occasions about how it's reported the details of the case.

All media companies should have policies for fixing errors in reporting.

WEWS, the ABC affiliate said it was sorry for reporting on the criminal past of the man who was being hailed as a hero for helping to rescue the women. The station said that while its story was factually correct, the timing was wrong.

Finally Some Good Ratings News for CNN

The big news around CNN is that it has, at least briefly, climbed out of the ratings crater it's been digging for itself. Its ratings in April were up around 80% from the same period a year ago.

Media Mistake in Boston Bombing Coverage

Any time there's a serious national emergency, such as the recent bombings at the Boston Marathon, it doesn't take long for media critics to point the finger at how reporters cover breaking news. This time, even the federal government is getting involved.

CNN's John King has gone public in expressing embarrassment over mistakenly reporting the arrest of a Boston bombing suspect two days before it actually happened.

The FBI criticized some media outlets for mistakenly reporting the arrest of one of the suspects, which didn't happen until two days later. The FBI said the blunder could have hurt its investigation.

"Zero TV" Households Are on the Rise in the U.S.

We all know people who never read the newspaper or may have stopped listening to AM/FM radio. Now there's a quickly growing group of "Zero TV" people who are giving up traditional television.

That's according to Nielsen, the same company which puts out the regular Nielsen ratings. The ratings track viewing habits so that local stations and broadcast networks can use the numbers to help sell advertising.

A New Report Shows Newspaper Paywalls Are Slowly Working

The gamble some newspapers have taken in putting up paywalls around their online content appears to be working. A new report from the Newspaper Association of America (NAA) shows circulation revenue is up 5%.

That's noteworthy because it's the first increase since 2003. Readers may now be accepting digital subscriptions as a normal business procedure and are willing to pay for news content they can't get anywhere else.

AP Is Dropping the Term "Illegal Immigrant"

The Associated Press is making a change in how it refers to people who are in the U.S. illegally. It says it's dropping the term "illegal immigrant" from its AP Stylebook, which is a guidebook used by countless news organizations around the world.

This is a major victory for those who thought the term was inaccurate and disrespectful of people, regardless of their legal status. The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) had asked news media to stop using the term as far back as 2009.
