Abolish Black History Month?

After all of the Valentine's Day hype and San Francisco's extended Chinese New Year festivities (beauty pageant, street fair, night-time parade, annual San Francisco Symphony concert, etc., etc.) , you might be suffering mega-event-withdrawal. Since you're in SF, though, you have options to help wean yourself from celebration addiction. February is Black History Month, and tonight's the screening of a cool film at the San Francisco Public Library. An African-American filmmaker contends that Black History Month is insulting because it is relegated to the coldest and shortest month of the year. San Francisco Cops Come Out for LGBT Kids

The San Francisco Police Department has released an "It Gets Better" video, affirming to LGBT kids that it will protect and defend them against bullying.

In the 8-1/2-minute video, uniformed department employees--men, women, various races and ethnicities, from commanders to dispatchers--recall the pain and turmoil of growing up in the closet. They were ashamed, depressed and suicidal. But coming out to their parents and friends was an easier and smoother process than they had feared--as well as a huge relief. As one female officer says, "I think it was harder for me to tell my mom than it was for my mom to hear what I had to say."

Year of the Dragon Roars to Life

The Year of the Dragon, according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, started on January 23, but most of the big, public festivities get underway this weekend. They include a basketball marathon, a beauty pageant, and free celebrations in San Francisco, Redwood City and San Jose with lion dancing, activities for kids and other fun.

Mayor Ed Lee and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg have made a bet over which city's team will be heading to the Super Bowl (Lee sends over sourdough or Bloomberg ships bagels), and by now you've probably made plans to watch (or ignore) Sunday's brawl at Candlestick between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants. Now is also when the trash talk starts heating up--like New Yorkers calling us wimps.
