Strength-->Cardio or Cardio-->Strength - And the Winner Is . . .

For many years gym trainers have been wondering about, and arguing about, whether it's best for your training if you do cardio or weights first in a single workout session.

I've always maintained that it's logical to do your weight session last -- for the simple reason that much of your strength and muscle building goes on in the hours after a weights session. That's when anabolic hormones like testosterone and growth hormone do their work, especially in conjunction with refueling and rest. Doing cardio second disrupts this process. Now we have some proof of concept. Testosterone response seems to be maximized if you do cardio first followed by weights according to a new study.
...
Read Full Post

Do Your Training Clients Need Medical Clearance?

For personal and professional reasons you don't want to have a medical emergency on your hands when training someone in a personal training or strength and conditioning session. Stuff happens, but you can prepare ahead by implementing risk management procedures that minimize the chances of a person you're training having a heart attack, stroke or diabetic hypo- or even hyper-glycemic event or similar episode that requires first-aid and medical attention.
...
Read Full Post

Paleo diets are recommended on the premise that we humans should eat as our ancestors did in the Paleolithic period more than 10,000 years ago. Then, Paleo advocates say, early humans ate mostly meat and vegetables and little in the way of carbohydrates like sweet fruit, potatoes and grains, nor beans or dairy. In other words, a low-carb type of diet.
...
Read Full Post
