The first time I gave birth, my husband took a few days' leave to spend with me and our newborn. At the time, I worked for a company that gave six weeks' paid maternity leave and my parents both came to help me recover from birth. So we got by with him taking just a few days' vacation here and there, and coming home early to bond with the baby when he could.

Pros and Cons of a Compressed Work Week

Last Friday, I was dropping off my girls at before care, a bit on the late side, when I ran into a fellow working mom who normally hits the road early to beat the traffic to work. She was wearing jeans and a happy, relaxed expression. Not the typical uniform of someone about to dive into the morning commute to work.
